ToggleWHAT HAPPENED?
Morgan missed from the penalty spot when San Diego were already 3-0 down at Snapdragon Stadium, a final result which left the team ninth in the standings and one place outside of the league 's play-off berths. A Naomi Girma own goal late in the first half and a quick double from Mallory Swanson and Jameese Joseph just before the penalty was given had done the damage.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
It was an eighth straight NWSL game without a win for San Diego, with coach Casey Stoney dismissed as a consequence of that streak four days before facing Chicago. Morgan is yet to score in nine regular season appearances so far in 2024, form which may have been responsible for the 34-year-old not being picked for the USWNT's Olympic squad. That's despite scoring 123 times and previously captaining the team.

WHAT NEXT FOR MORGAN?
With no break from club football for Morgan, her focus will stay on the NWSL and San Diego Wave's campaign. The team has 11 regular season games left and arresting the current run of form is vital to making the play-offs in November. By the time they play their next game against Morgan's former club Portland Thorns on July 5, she will have celebrated her 35th birthday.
